Canadian Pitcher Garrett Hawkins Earns Padres 40-Man Roster Spot
Canadian baseball is celebrating a big win: Garrett Hawkins, a 25‑year‑old right‑hander, has been named to the San Diego Padres 40‑man roster. He also happens to be longtime Eagles voluntee,r Jayne Hawkins' nephew!
Garrett Hawkins is a Canadian pitcher from Biggar, Saskatchewan, who played high school baseball at the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball in Alberta before moving on to the University of British Columbia.
Hawkins, drafted in the 9th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of the University of British Columbia, has battled back from Tommy John surgery to deliver a dominant 2025 season. Across High‑A and Double‑A, he posted a 1.50 ERA in 60 innings, striking out hitters at a blistering pace and stringing together 38 consecutive scoreless innings — the longest streak by a minor league pitcher in a decade.
His performance earned him the title of 2025 Padres MiLB Pitcher of the Year, and now he’s one step away from joining the ranks of Canadians in Major League Baseball.
With spring training on the horizon, Hawkins is poised to show that Canadian arms can shine on the biggest stage.
